1 Scope

1.1 These requirements apply to self-contained spas, including hot tubs and cold tubs. They also apply to field-installed equipment assemblies, blowers, and controls for use with field-installed hot and cold tubs, swimming pools, non-self-contained spas, and exercise spas. These products are for household or commercial use, indoors, outdoors, or both. All equipment is intended for installation and use in accordance with Article 680 of the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70.

1.2 These requirements do not apply to products covered by the following UL Standards:

1. a) Underwater Luminaires and Submersible Junction Boxes, UL 676;

2. b) Swimming Pool Pumps, Filters, and Chlorinators, UL 1081;

3. c) Electric Water Heaters for Pools and Tubs, UL 1261;

4. d) Personal Hygiene and Health Care Appliances, UL 1431 (professional hydrotherapy equipment – whirlpool bathtubs); and

5. e) Hydromassage Bathtubs, UL 1795.

Summary of Topics

This revision of ANSI/UL 1563 dated June 1, 2026 includes the following changes in requirements:

– Addition of Proposed Requirements for Heat Pumps or Chillers that Use Flammable Refrigerants; Section 3, 4.23A, 4.31A, 8.6.1, 8.6.1A, 8.6.1B, 8.6.1C, 8.6.5, Section 8.7, and Annex D.
