627450-000000-0000001 Scope
1.1 This Outline applies to electrical, electronic, and programmable electronic control systems of industrial machines, where an Operator Control (“transmitter”) utilizes wireless technologies to transmit commands to a Machine Control (“receiver”) to control a safety related function.
1.2 This Outline is intended to be used in conjunction with:
– UL 508, Standard for Safety of Industrial Control Equipment, or
– UL 60947-5-1, Low-voltage Switchgear and Controlgear – Part 5-1: Control Circuit Devices and UL 60947-1, Switching Elements Electromechanical Control Circuit Devices and Low-Voltage Switchgear and Controlgear – Part 1: General Rules, or
– UL 61010-1, Standard for Safety of Electrical Equipment for Measurement, Control, and Laboratory Use; Part 1: General Requirements, and UL 61010-2-201, the Standard for Safety of Electrical Equipment for Measurement, Control, and Laboratory Use; Part 2-201: Particular Requirements for Control Equipment, which include the electrical safety requirements for the control system.
Requirements contained in this Outline add, modify, and/or supersede the requirements in the above mentioned standards.
1.3 This Outline includes additional safety requirements that address the functional safety of the Operator Control and the Machine Control together as a system that are not covered by the requirements of standards mentioned in 2.
1.4 This Outline includes requirements to address risks associated with the use of wireless technologies such as radios and infrared that operate on a private, local area network.
1.5 This Outline does not include requirements to address risks associated with the use of wireless technologies that could be exposed to intentional, unauthorized access or attack through a remote network. Risks associated with unauthorized access or attack through a network are addressed in standards such as the Standard for Safety for Remote Software Updates, UL 5500 and the series of Standards for Software Cybersecurity for Network-Connectable Products, UL 2900.
1.6 This Outline does not include requirements related to the proper and accurate construction or operation of the mechanical aspects of machines.
1.7 This Outline does not include requirements related to the proper integration of the control systems with the machines.
1.8 This Outline includes requirements to verify that the Operator Control and Machine Control enable or disable machine movement only when qualified professional operators, who have been trained on mandatory operating procedures for proper use of the equipment, are constructing, commissioning, operating, monitoring, and maintaining the machine.
