out-7103.1Outline for Investigation for Building-Integrated Photovoltaic Roof Coverings
7103
1 Scope
1.1 These requirements cover building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) roof coverings for use as a component of a steep slope roof assembly. These products are intended to be installed in accordance with the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70, and either the International Building Code or the International Residential Code, and the installation instructions.
1.2 These requirements cover BIPV roof coverings for use in photovoltaic systems with a maximum system voltage of 1500 V or less.
1.3 These requirements cover the measurement of the relative fire characteristics of BIPV roof coverings exposed to simulated fire sources originating from outside a building on which the coverings are installed. They are applicable to BIPV roof coverings intended for installation on either combustible or noncombustible roof decks when the roof coverings are applied as intended. Tests conducted in accordance with these requirements are intended to demonstrate the performance of roof coverings during the types and periods of fire exposure involved but are not intended to determine the acceptability of BIPV roof coverings for use after exposure to fire. These fire test methods do not provide a basis to compare expected performance under all actual fire conditions, but they do provide a basis for comparison of the response of BIPV roof coverings when subjected to fire sources that are described herein.
1.4 These requirements cover the resistance to water infiltration to the interior attic space. BIPV roof coverings are not expected to withstand the wind forces of tornados, cyclones, or hurricanes.
1.5 These requirements cover the impact resistance of BIPV roof coverings. from the steel ball at locations on the assembly selected to be most vulnerable, such as (but not limited to) edges, corners, unsupported sections and joints. The effects of weathering, temperature, aging or similar effects on the impact resistance of BIPV roof coverings are not covered. These and other factors, including time, roof slope, roof system configuration and application influence the performance of roofing materials in the field. It is not the objective of this test to address all of these factors.
1.6 These requirements provide data regarding the securement of the roofing system to the roof deck based upon a short-term static load. When needed the option to include the roof deck attachment to supports shall be described in the test report.
1.7 These requirements also cover components intended to provide electrical connection to and mounting means for photovoltaic modules and panels intended for installation integral with buildings as a roof covering material, and other ancillary equipment.
1.8 These requirements do not cover:
a) Equipment intended to accept the electrical output from the array, such as power conditioning units (inverters) and batteries;
b) Solar thermal collectors;
c) Ground-mounted photovoltaic arrays;
d) Rooftop mounted photovoltaic modules or panels;
e) Building integrated photovoltaic wall assemblies; or
f) Building-integrated photovoltaic skylights or roof windows
