out-60692.1Outline of Investigation for Circuit Interrupters with Fire Extinguishing Agent for Use in Electrical Appliances and Components
60692
1 Scope
1.1 These requirements apply to Circuit Interrupters with Fire Extinguishing Agent (CIFEA) intended to be installed on printed wiring boards or in freestanding end products. These devices are intended to actuate under abnormal conditions of the controlled load, at a predetermined temperature to release an extinguishing agent while interrupting the electrical circuit.
Note - A CIFEA does not replace the function of a fuse.
1.2 This Outline supplements or modifies the corresponding clauses of the Standard for Thermal-Links - Requirements and Application Guide, UL 60691. Unless otherwise noted, all clauses of UL 60691 are applicable.
1.3 These requirements are intended to address the inherent electrical safety of the product and the efficacy of the functionality. The effectiveness of such products when used in combination with a specific end-product is outside the scope of this outline of investigation.
Note - The acceptability of a CIFEA in any particular application or appliance depends upon its acceptability for continued use under the conditions that prevail in actual service. Compliance of a CIFEA to the requirements in this Outline evaluates the electrical and thermal attributes of the device. These requirements are intended to be used in conjunction with the Safety Standard requirements of an end-product, to determine whether the device is acceptable for use in an end-use application.
1.4 The requirements of this outline are limited to devices that, when actuated, expel fire extinguishing agents that are non-conductive (Halocarbon clean agent) and will not adversely interfere with the safe use of the equipment under normal operating conditions.
1.5 The outline is applicable to devices with a rated voltage not exceeding 600V.
