2 Scope

2.1 This Document:

1. a) Provides a framework to identify and assess environmental impacts of products, including producing documentation of impact assessments and sustainability practices; and

2. b) Offers an approach for calculating nature-related impacts for a product using relevant metrics.

2.2 This Document does not cover:

1. a) Geographic-specific regulations;

2. b) Financial reporting requirements;

3. c) Operational practices for implementing nature initiatives; or

4. d) Social and economic impacts unrelated to nature.

2.3 This Document is intended for use by enterprises seeking to better understand the impact of their product cluster on nature. It is not intended for use by entities seeking third-party certification or regulatory compliance documentation.

2.4 This Document focuses on assessing the environmental impact of products and does not cover broader organizational nature impact considerations, which are covered in ISO 17298, Biodiversity – Considering biodiversity in the strategy and operations of organizations – Requirements and guidelines. specifies the relationship between ISO 17298 and this Document.

2.5 This Document does not address worker safety, social or ethical concerns, or specific environmental regulations covered by other guidelines or standards. It focuses exclusively on product-related nature impacts.

2.6 This Document provides a product-agnostic framework in Part 1 that applies to enterprises across all industries and stages of the value chain. Part 2 of this Document provides sector-specific guidance for construction materials as defined by the Sustainable Industry Classification System (SICS®). Materials covered in Part 2 – Requirements for Construction Materials Sector include:

1. a) Cement;

2. b) Aggregates;

3. c) Glass;

4. d) Plastic materials;

5. e) Insulation;

6. f) Bricks; and

7. g) Roofing materials.
