014990-000000-0000001 Scope
1.1 This document specifies recommended practices for software update engineering in appliances. This document encompasses the minimum elements of Design, Development, and Deployment of software update(s); including the software update(s) then being transmitted to products already in the field (marketplace):
a) Design – Includes manufacturer activities from the idea generation (of a specific feature or function) through high level internal processes (but not their outputs)
b) Development – Includes manufacturer activities after Design, including actual engineering change activities and verification and validation done internally by the manufacturer.
c) Deployment – Includes manufacturer activities after Development, up to and including transmitting software updates to products already in the field by remote means.
1.2 Applicable product categories targeted for this document include, but are not limited to, the following:
a) Residential/Commercial HVAC;
b) Residential/Commercial lighting systems; and
c) Residential/Commercial appliances (e.g., small appliances, refrigerator, dryer, washing machine, dishwasher, televisions, microwaves).
1.3 This document does not cover the effect of the software update on the overall safety of the appliance. It is expected that any effect on safety or other related product certifications, performance, or warranties is the burden of the manufacturer to ensure prior to deploying software updates to products already in the field.
1.4 This document does not cover any cybersecurity aspects related to data, safety, security, or performance. Cybersecurity risks are the burden of the manufacturer to ensure prior to, during, and after any software updates.
1.5 This document does not cover specific requirements of smartphones, tablets, personal computers, routers, gateways, or other related information technology equipment.
