1 Scope

1.1 These requirements cover indicator posts, including underground types and above ground types which may be mounted vertically or horizontally, for use in operating butterfly valves and for indicating the position of such valves. Indicator posts are primarily intended for use with valves controlling water supplies to sprinkler deluge, water spray, foam and standpipe systems used in private fire service where connections enter buildings.

1.2 Requirements for the installation and use of the indicator posts covered by this outline are included in the following Standards of the National Fire Protection Association:

1. a) Foam Extinguishing Systems, NFPA 11;

2. b) Medium and High Expansion Foam Systems, NFPA 11A;

3. c) The Installation of Sprinkler Systems, NFPA 13;

4. d) The Installation of Standpipe and Hose Systems, NFPA 14;

5. e) Water Spray Fixed Systems for Fire Protection, NFPA 15;

6. f) Deluge Foam-Water Sprinkler Systems and Foam-Water Spray Systems, NFPA 16;

7. g) The Installation of Centrifugal Fire Pumps, NFPA 20;

8. h) Water Tanks for Private Fire Protection, NFPA 22; and

9. i) Outside Protection, NFPA 24.
